A Week after the Races, ‘Slurs Fall at the Last Hurdle

Tonight’s match against the Tivoli Boys was nothing like the rodgering received at the Adam & Eve, but a spirited display by the Hustlers was eventually thwarted by the two final hands of the night.

Although first leg was notable for two spares which saved the blushes of Gary and Lloyd respectively, neither was able to match spareless Chris.  Nevertheless first leg won the Hustlers a lead of 3 pins which, helped by an encouraging first three hands from Dave, managed to push on the lead by a couple of additional pins.

This was just as well, as third leg was up against it, only Andy (with joint top score) making any headway against an improved opposition.  The outcome was that all of the lead was dissipated and both teams began the fourth leg all square.

Although Lofty was having desperately bad luck with his splits, last leg managed to hold off the opposition and at the fifth hand was even holding on to a 5 pin lead.  However, a low hand of 14 was enough to turn the tables which meant the sixth hand was forced to chase a 3 pin deficit.  The 17 pins that the Tivoli Boys were set might have made the game close but for a spare by the opposition’s anchor man which resulted in a 6 pin defeat.
