Hustlers flattered to deceive with an upside down performance at the United Services Club against Flowers Originals on Wednesday night, with each leg attaining successively lower scores.
First leg turned out to be the best of the night, highlighted by an excellent spare-less 51 by Neil which was backed up by a very good 43 by Lloyd. The resultant lead of 13 gave no hint of the Flowers’ onslaught to come.
Second leg also performed well with both Pete and John scoring in the 40s and the leg finishing with 120. However, Flowers were now well into the groove and their total of 137, the highest of the night, meant that all and more of the Hustlers’ lead had disappeared by the end of the leg.
Third leg were thus left with a small but manageable deficit of 4 pins. Scoring was very similar to that of second leg with Swayner and Ant both achieving 40s but were no match for a 130 leg by Flowers and a further 11 pins were added to the shortfall.
Last leg stepped up with 15 pins to recover and throughout most of the leg looked capable of pulling the game back. Unfortunately it all went wrong at the end, and another 50 score by the opposition against what turned out to be Hustlers’ lowest leg of the night resulted in a loss of a further 12 pins and a defeat overall of 27.
