Fresh from our Exmouth trip, but much depleted, Hustlers and their sherpas ascended the daunting face of the Cotswold escarpment, looking to complete the double over the Outsiders at Cleeve Hill Golf Club.
A mixed start from first leg, as Lloyd opened by snatching control of Barry the Brasilian Beaver on his way to bottom score, while Chris claimed our first 9 and 40. Trailing by 12 pins, second leg then showed what they were made of. Bottom-scoring leg (despite Stu’s 9), they were outgunned and dropped a further 21 pins, to leave us trailing by 33 at the midpoint.
With Gary adding our second 40, third leg showed a little improvement against Outsiders’ lowest-scoring leg, only losing by 12 pins, leaving the anchors just needing 46 pins to claim victory. Cap’n Clive narrowly missed out on his 40, while Pete’s only gave him second place in the Hyland battle. Chalking up our only spare, Neil claimed top score in beating his man, as the anchors became our only winning leg. But that simply reduced the gap by one pin, leaving us with another loss.
There’s another gap next week, as skittles gives way to the Gold Cup, so we reconvene in a fortnight, looking to avange our narrow defeat at the hands of the Tivoli Boys.
